I am always stunned by the incredible detail of these flowers, the regularity of the chequering is brilliant. So often nature creates such beautiful symmetry.
Fritillaria are notoriously difficult to grow….if they don’t like where you’ve put them. When my neighbour first planted a small group of these she had a mixture of purple and white flowering bulbs. Over a few years they have decided they don’t really like their original spot and those who have survived are gradually moving down hill.
They are stunning but I must admit lying on a damp May lawn to draw them isn’t my favourite way of spending a morning.
